John Madden Appearing During Pat Summerall’s Voice-Over: A Review

A fitting dissonance

Madden Football 64 famously did not grab an NFL license but did have an NFLPA license, meaning it had access to the players but none of the iconography or team names. This means that the “Foxboro” team takes the field looking like a generic American flag. It also tracks that play-by-play commentator Pat Summerall has plenty of lines, but only shows up in tiny ways — John Madden’s portrait appears almost every single time Summerall has a line.

Poor Pat

What did Pat ever do to deserve this treatment?

It's no Dan Stevens & Peter O'Keefe

You can’t coach that.

3.8 / 10

One of the first two-man booths in video games was handled terribly, so maybe it worked out for Pat that his presence was mostly erased on screen.
